The shaping machine is used for surface machining of metals. On this machine, the cutting tool carries out both the cutting movement and a gradual lateral movement for each cut; in other machine types, the metal blank moves laterally while the cutting tool only carries out the cutting movement. The shaping machine's operational method makes it relatively slow, which is why it has been replaced in modern engineering by the rotating milling machine.
This particular machine was made at Munktells Mekaniska Verkstads AB in 1891 and has been used by various production departments within the company.
